Silk Ribbon Garter & Embroidered Handkerchief Gift Set

Date: c. 1920s

Origin: United States

Fabric: Silk

Brand: Unknown

A gift set comprising of a pair of garters, handkerchief and a storage case, displayed on a foiled card board. This set was likely originally contained within a gift box, similar tothis gift box within our collection.

The garters have a base of elastic overlaid with a pale pink silk ribbon and mint striped ribbon, finished with multitoned silk ribbonwork flowers. The handkerchief has a base of silk georgette, trimmed with a fine ecru leavers lace trim and hand embroidered with floral motifs. Katie's Medium page has a base of satin overlaid with Schiffli embroidered tulle and trimmed with a ruffled pale pink silk ribbon.

Garters were commonly worn to keep stockings up just above the knee until the popularisation of suspenders, whether attached to corsets or a belt. Until the invention of elastic, garters were tied onto the body with ribbon. Elastication allowed for a more comfortable and flexible fit.
